HSK 2Grammar Structure

Mastering 有多 (yǒu duō) + Adjective: Asking 'How [Adjective]?' in Chinese

Master the Chinese grammar structure 有多 + Adjective to ask questions like 'How tall?' or 'How big?'. Essential for HSK 2 learners to describe and inquire.

1. Meaning and Usage

The structure "有多 + Adjective?" is used to inquire about the degree, extent, or measurement of a certain quality or characteristic. It functions similarly to "How [adjective]...?" in English, asking for a specific assessment or magnitude of a given attribute.

2. Formulas and Examples

a) Direct Question about Degree

This is the most common use, asking directly for the extent of an adjective.

$$Subject + 有多 + Adjective?$$

他有多高? Tā yǒu duō gāo? How tall is he?

这个房间有多大? Zhège fángjiān yǒu duō dà? How big is this room?

b) Embedded Question (Indirect Question)

The "有多 + Adjective" phrase can be embedded within a larger sentence, often following verbs like 知道 (to know), 想知道 (to want to know), 告诉 (to tell), etc. In this case, it forms a subordinate clause.

$$Subject + Verb + [Optional Subject] + 有多 + Adjective$$

我不知道他有多忙。 Wǒ bù zhīdào tā yǒu duō máng. I don't know how busy he is.

你可以告诉我这件事情有多难吗? Nǐ kěyǐ gàosù wǒ zhè jiàn shìqíng yǒu duō nán ma? Can you tell me how difficult this matter is?

c) Rhetorical or Emphatic Usage

It can be used rhetorically to emphasize a certain degree, often with verbs like 不知道 (don't know), 无法想象 (cannot imagine), or in exclamatory sentences to express "You don't know how [adjective]..." or "It's hard to say how [adjective]...".

$$Subject + 不知道/无法想象/很难说 + [Optional Subject] + 有多 + Adjective$$

你不知道我有多喜欢她。 Nǐ bù zhīdào wǒ yǒu duō xǐhuān tā. You don't know how much I like her. (Literally: You don't know how liked she is by me.)

很难说我们离成功有多远。 Hěn nán shuō wǒmen lí chénggōng yǒu duō yuǎn. It's hard to say how far we are from success.

3. Essential HSK Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Difference from "多 + Adjective?" : While often interchangeable in simple questions, "有多 + Adjective?" tends to emphasize the specific measurement or degree more strongly than "多 + Adjective?". For example, "你多高?" is a general question about height, whereas "你有多高?" might subtly imply asking for an exact measurement. Both are usually acceptable. However, "有多 + Adjective?" is almost always appropriate when asking for a measurable quantity.
  • No "吗" : When using "有多 + Adjective?" in a direct question, do not add the interrogative particle 吗. The "有" combined with "多" already forms the question.

[Correct] 这个苹果有多重? Zhège píngguǒ yǒu duō zhòng? How heavy is this apple?

[Incorrect] 这个苹果有多重吗? Zhège píngguǒ yǒu duō zhòng ma? (Incorrect usage)

  • Cannot be used with all adjectives: This structure is best suited for measurable or quantifiable adjectives (e.g., height, weight, size, distance, difficulty, age of objects). It is generally not used with psychological verbs or adjectives expressing strong emotions like 喜欢 (to like), 讨厌 (to dislike) in direct questions. While rhetorical uses like "你不知道我有多喜欢她" exist, for direct queries like "How much do you like it?", you would typically use degree adverbs (e.g., "你有多喜欢它?" is less common than "你喜欢它到什么程度?" or simply "你多喜欢它?").
  • Subject placement in embedded clauses: When "有多 + Adjective" is an embedded question, the subject of that embedded clause must precede 有多.

[Correct] 我想知道你住的地方离这里有多远。 Wǒ xiǎng zhīdào nǐ zhù de dìfāng lí zhèlǐ yǒu duō yuǎn. I want to know how far the place you live is from here.

[Incorrect] 我想知道有多远你住的地方离这里。 Wǒ xiǎng zhīdào yǒu duō yuǎn nǐ zhù de dìfāng lí zhèlǐ. (Incorrect word order)
